“The Glorious Playground” ethos of the Gleneagles country estate might not make an obvious match to the city life, but that is just what the brand is attempting, with its first opening in the capital of Scotland. Formerly home to the British Linen Company and later the Bank of Scotland, the Gleneagles Townhouse is an urban gateway with thirty-three bedrooms designed with a sense of understated luxury and quirky references to the building’s historical purpose. This is Ace Hotels’ first opening south of the equator, launching with 264 rooms. The hotel occupies Surry Hills’ former Tyne House Brick Factory and stands out with its design that pays an honest homage to the history of the neighborhood and the warm color palette of the Australian landscape. The interiors contrast natural textures and tones, from the striking ochre on the lobby staircase to the straw walls in the rooms. The rooms offer casual, well-considered comfort and are available in several options, but even within each category, they are “all a little different.” A restaurant, bar, and cafe are available in the hotel’s communal lobby, and another restaurant and bar are on the rooftop.

is a five-star luxury villa, initially constructed in the 1930s as a private residence for aristocratic families. Today it is restored and reimagined as a boutique hotel that turns heads with its well-considered design blending modern aesthetics with a classic “colonial revival” architecture. A careful four-year restoration brought many of the building’s original features to their original splendor — and the nineteen suites of the hotel blend old with new and intimate with spacious. Casa Polanco also features an honors bar and a signature restaurant. Its address in the center of the upscale neighborhood of Polanco makes it a great pad from which to explore the greater Mexico City area.

Castle Elvira has a sad genesis story: it was built in the 1880s by a wealthy couple for their daughter’s seventeenth birthday, but her tragic passing has left the place abandoned. Over a hundred years later, following a three-year rehabilitation project that kept many original design features, the property reopened its doors as a luxurious hotel, offering en-suite bedrooms, a cinema, a swimming pool, and a roof terrace. The well-curated interiors feature an eclectic collection of antique furniture alongside vibrant modern art, with the latest technology integrated into the fabric of the building. The hotel also features a bar, and a café, located in the hotel’s private gardens. Nearby, still on the grounds of the castle is its sister property, Tower Elvira. Originally a lookout tower, the place was converted into a luxury dwelling with a 40m2 swimming pool and colonnaded sun loungers.

“[…] the seminary in Corso Venezia is an architectural jewel in our urban fabric, […] set to become a major destination for any visit to Milan not least for the architectural value of the colonnade and the Renaissance perfection of its proportions.” — Michele De Lucchi, architect.
Portrait Hotels is part of a small Lungarno Collection portfolio, and the opening in the capital of fashion, Milan, marks the third hotel launched under the Portrait brand. And what opening it is: in a former Archiepiscopal Seminary (Europe’s oldest), with a beautiful baroque entrance designed in 1652 by Francesco Maria Richini — and a 3000 square-meter piazza surrounded by a double colonnaded loggia. The carefully restored building at 11 Corso Venezia has restaurants, shopping arcades, and event space. The renovated and redecorated hotel welcomes guests with a restrained luxury. The style brings out the building’s classic beauty, combining heritage architecture with modernized interiors.
