Sophisticated style, classy elegance, and first-rate service are the hallmarks of St. Regis, and the chain’s Mexico City outpost does not disappoint. The hotel is housed in the sleek, 31-story Torre Libertad, found in a highly coveted address in the historic Paseo de la Reforma neighborhood, amid vibrant street life. The hotel features one hundred eighty-nine spacious guest rooms and suites that offer breathtaking views of the sprawling city through huge picture windows. Facilities include an Indoor Pool, Remède Spa, and a 24-Hour Business Center — and the city views can also be enjoyed from the well-equipped indoor fitness. Guests can choose from several culinary options, but the J&G Grill comes especially highly recommended. Private butler service is available, too.

Grupo Habita has became known for a small number of unique properties in Mexico, including Hotel Escondido (which we loved for the seafront location and the barefoot luxe vibe, perfect for beach living). The Círculo Mexicano hotel in downtown Mexico City is very different. Occupying a 19th-century residential building, Círculo wows with a style imbued with a sense of clean, minimal luxury. Still, the hotel interiors accentuate the building’s original character, and the French-style bistro recalls its illustrious history. The hotel’s facilities include a rooftop terrace with a swimming pool.

The Ritz-Carlton Mexico City was a significant opening for Ritz-Carlton in the Caribbean and Latin America when it launched in the region’s most cosmopolitan city. The hotel has an excellent location in the city’s financial center, ensuring beautiful views of Chapultepec Park from many of Ritz-Carlton’s 153 rooms and private residences. The guest accommodation occupies floors 36 to 47 of a striking 58-floor-high glass tower. This high-class city resort offers a full range of facilities, including a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and bar as well as a swimming pool and spa with a fitness center.

Four Seasons Hotel Mexico is housed in a beautiful property that wows with classical architecture. Inside, the hotel is thoroughly modern, promising the high-class luxury the brand is well-known for. The hotel’s two hundred and forty guest rooms and forty spacious suites are arranged around a private garden, offering an oasis of tranquility amid the bustle of the city (though many rooms overlook tree-lined central boulevard Paseo de la Reforma). Among the facilities are the El Bar lounge, a rooftop pool, spa, and the classy Zanaya restaurant — a must-visit for seafood devotees. There is a gym, too, and the Business travelers will find a large, fully equipped business center here. Four Seasons Hotel Mexico offers a peaceful experience just a few steps from some of the city’s most celebrated attractions.

In the city’s historic heart, a maze of narrow cobblestone streets is peppered by historic colonial landmarks. One of them, dating to the seventeenth century but now superbly renovated, houses Downtown Mexico. The hotel’s magnificent building is one of the oldest intact residences in the area, and its elegant interiors retain many period details. Still, they have a thoroughly 21st-century feel that blends influences from the indigenous culture with the heritage colonial style and industrial minimalism. This contemporary boutique hotel has only 17 guest rooms featuring hi-tech accessories and hot tubs. Among the standout facilities of Downtown Mexico is the terracotta roof terrace with a swimming pool and palm-fringed jacuzzi.

Another hotel that promises a tranquil escape from the bustling streets of Mexico City is the Sofitel Reforma, a stylish destination of 275 guest rooms and 56 suites with exclusive amenities designed in a chic French style. The guests of Sofitel can taste inventive cocktails and experience creative cuisine in five different food-and-beverage venues and can relax in the serene but lavishly appointed spa. The luxurious 38th-floor pool is the best place from which to take in the striking views of the city, though the same can also be said about all rooms of the hotel.

The trendsetting brand hidden behind the enigmatic name “W” brings to Mexico City its trademark take on contemporary luxury, in which guests can expect inventive design ideas and a playful atmosphere. The comforts and amenities are worthy of the five-star experience typical for this exciting hotel chain; the rainforest shower jets and plasma flat-screen TVs in the uber-chic guest rooms being the least of it. W Mexico City has two on-site restaurants and a vibrant Lobby Bar, while the AWAY Spa offers a range of relaxing treatments for the experience of a tranquil slowdown.

The unique style of this boutique hotel comes from the Parisian designer India Mahdavi, who took inspiration from the work of the celebrated architect Luis Barragán to create a property unmistakably Mexican in spirit. The 1928 Art Nouveau building in the La Condesa neighborhood features chic, eclectic interiors that stand out thanks to striking color themes (such as cream, moss green, and chocolate). Forty rooms and suites are spread across four hotel floors, and each spacious accommodation opens onto a large wooden terrace. Guests staying at Condesa DF can enjoy lush gardens, the spa with a sauna, and a traditional hammam, while the chic daybeds at the fourth-floor rooftop lounge are perfect spots to sip sundowner cocktails.

There are only thirty-five rooms to choose from at this boutique hotel located in the Polanco district. Las Alcobas feels like a private retreat, and the slick design by Yabu Pushelberg underscores this sense. The understated elegance and luxury, combined with intimate service (butler included), make it a stylish refuge in the heart of the city. The rooms come with custom-made rosewood furniture and goose-down bedding, as well as a whirlpool tub. The two on-site restaurants, Anatol and Dulce, are showstoppers that give the hottest restaurants and bars in the neighborhood a run for their money.

Casa Polanco is a five-star luxury villa, initially constructed in the 1930s as a private residence for aristocratic families. Today it is restored and reimagined as a boutique hotel that turns heads with its well-considered design blending modern aesthetics with a classic “colonial revival” architecture. A careful four-year restoration brought many of the building’s original features to their original splendor — and the nineteen suites of the hotel blend old with new and intimate with spacious. Casa Polanco also features an honors bar and a signature restaurant. Its address in the center of the upscale neighborhood of Polanco makes it a great pad from which to explore the greater Mexico City area.

Umbral is located in the heart of historic downtown Mexico City, near the Cathedral, the Palace of Fine Arts, and Zocalo square. It also provides easy access to many restaurants and bars in the area.

Located on one of the trendiest streets in the affluent Polanco neighborhood, Habita is known as Mexico City’s first design hotel (it was launched in 2000). The 1950s-era clouded-glass facade of the building housing the hotel is instantly recognizable, and its period character blends with the calming white design of the hotel interiors. Imbued with luxurious touches, Habita comprises only 36 rooms in total, among which the Junior Suites come with a large living room and terrace permitting city views. The hotel features a top-floor terrace that at night plays the role of a luxurious lounge lit by a fireplace. Habita’s guests benefit from access to the sauna and spa.

When it comes to privacy and exclusive offering, Mexico City’s smallest hotel takes the crown. La Valise features only three guest rooms — albeit enormous ones — and it wows with unique colonial charm and a fantastic collection of antiques, custom art, and collectibles. Guests have the option of booking the whole hotel or choose one of the stylish rooms. The top-floor La Terraza is the most sought-after, thanks to the bed that slides out onto a private terrace allowing guests to sleep “under the stars.” The dreamy design of La Valise features Mesoamerican-inspired wall art and creative ideas such as a revolving moon that masquerades as a door.

This 20th-century Belle Époque grand townhouse has an illustrious history. It was once home to the Mexican president, but later it became a brothel (!) and then a locksmith shop. Today it houses the Brick Hotel, whose style calls upon the stories of the past to create an experience of authentic luxury. But that experience is reflected first and foremost in the excellent service, which starts with a chauffeur pick-up at the airport. The hotel design fuses contemporary chic with the Belle Époque elements, featuring wrought-iron doors, leafy balconies, original-tiled floors, claw-foot tubs, and walls adorned by work from Mexican artists. Guests can enjoy two in-house restaurants (including the celebrated Brick) and a speakeasy-style basement bar. A shaded roof terrace filled with greenery is an excellent hangout for an afternoon aperitivo.

The Wild Oscar is a self-styled “home of adventurous souls and creative minds.” It’s a boutique hotel infused with a sense of style and originality. The hotel exterior features sharply defined concrete window frames, bringing to mind a fashionable coworking space. Inside, it feels much more like a private members’ club, with highly personal decor that includes original artwork and quirky collections, such as antique room keys arranged on a red velvet wall in the reception. The loft-like rooms enhance the sense of a private residential atmosphere with spa-like bathrooms. Many rooms come with private terraces.

Hyatt Regency has an unbeatable location in the upscale district of Polanco; it wows with grand interiors and stuns with views of the city’s skyline. And the excellent service takes the experience up a notch, especially for the Regency Club guests who are treated to a host of extras, such as private check-in and concierge services. Hyatt Regency is one of the larger hotels on our list — it comes with as many as 775 rooms and suites — and it is geared mainly towards business travelers. They can enjoy a full range of services and facilities, including a spa, swimming pool, and several dining venues; there is even an artisan Bakery at Amado Pasteleria.

Campos Elíseos, the light-filled turn-of-the-century mansion set on one of Polanco’s tree-lined streets, is the host of Orchid House. This eleven-room boutique hotel is styled with a modern elegance that is perfectly at ease with the colonial style of the building. The eponymous orchids dot the entryways, and beautiful plants and flowers are integral to the hotel’s charm. Each guest suite is tastefully decorated and features vintage elements, such as Spanish tiles or punched-tin ceilings. The hotel has world-class amenities, and its continental breakfast is excellent. The Pug Seal hotels offer a creative blend of family-run B&Bs and small boutique hotels. Among them, the Pug Seal Anatole France stands out as a unique property. With twenty-six suites, it is bigger than other hotels in the Pug portfolio, but it’s also a brand new build rather than a heritage structure. And it brims with personality and cool design ideas. Antiques, old-school paintings, and dark wood paneling are paired with uber-modern pieces, iron furniture, and the eye-popping “Wimbledon purple and green” tones. The hotel instantly makes guests feel at home, even if they’d be hard-pressed to find a home as eclectic and creative as the Polanco-located Pug Seal Anatole France.

The vibrant Colonia Roma is the neighborhood surrounding Ignacia Guest House, a unique hotel of only five suites set in 1913 historic mansion and the adjacent modern extension. It’s a child of a successful collaboration between the architecture practice Factor Eficiencia and the interior design studio A-G. The hotel concept celebrates the personality of Ignacia, who was the mansion’s housekeeper for more than 70 years. The restoration work on the old part preserved the original floor plan and retained original ceilings and doors, making the guest rooms feel like an integral part of a household. A beautiful garden dotted with orange trees between the old and new buildings emphasizes the feeling of refuge.
