Following the success of the Cavo Tagoo in Mykonos, the brand’s next property in Santorini takes its now tried-and-tested formula to new heights, creating the trendiest hotel on the island.

Harmony in design

It seems the Cavo Tagoo creators found a perfect recipe for fusing contemporary luxury with a sense of place — and the location itself plays a big role in the hotel’s appeal. The iconic, spell-binding Santorini seascape is a beautiful backdrop to the design and comforts of Cavo.

The architecture embodies elegant sophistication, with its simple angles and shapes creating a sense of luxury living. While the predominant color palette is white and grey, there are plenty of smoked wood and rose gold touches. It all feels minimal, but soft, inspiring the feeling of harmony.

Our suite

The hotel rooms on Santorini tend to be on the small side — but at Cavo, this is not the case. We stayed at one of their sunset suites with pool, where the living space was plentiful, and the setting of the large pool and terrace decorated with white stones was the perfect frame to the stunning view (did you see our photos on Instagram?)

We thought it was an ideal place to sunbathe, with an occasional swim, or just to pass the time al fresco, admiring the view and perhaps enjoying a bottle of wine.

Good times at OVAC

We loved to start the day with a la carte breakfast in the very cool OVAC restaurant, which overlooks the main infinity pool. From Continental to Greek, and from the excellent coffee to signature juices, the food never disappointed here.

OVAC is where the days would end as well. The place becomes the star attraction in the late afternoons when its clubby poolside mood really kicks in. This is when the glamorous crowd gathers for cocktails, fun, and the island’s best sushi, and when the restaurant spills its trendy vibe onto the surroundings decking, with its loungers well-placed to enjoy sundowners.

We couldn’t actually decide which place we preferred for sunset: our private terrace or the main infinity pool next to the restaurant? Ultimately, we did both, on different evenings — realizing that whichever spot we picked, Cavo Tagoo Santorini was perfect for watching the crimson sun dipping below the horizon, and into the vast Aegean.

Undoubtedly one of the best Santorini luxury hotels, the Cavo Tagoo has all the elements of a trendy stay, with days filled with fun and excitement — rounded off by the never disappointing scarlet sunsets. A great choice for a romantic weekend or a honeymoon.

What we love

• Location, at the northern outskirts of Imerovigli, with some truly fantastic views of the caldera and the island. Sunsets at the main pool are to die for.
• Sublime design, with a nice balance of architectural minimalism and soft shapes and organic materials.
• The ever-changing ambiance. Cavo can be tranquil during the day, only to become partygoing in the evenings. This place is both fun and relaxing.
• Our private pool with the view over the caldera was definitely a highlight, and our suite overall was lovely. Elegant, spacious, well designed — we couldn't ask for much more.
• The main swimming pool is gorgeous. It's heated and its infinity surface goes up to the edge of the caldera. The floating sun loungers are great for sundowners — or for sunbathing if you feel too lonely on your private terrace.
• We loved the food overall. The well-appointed OVAC restaurant serves Mediterranean Fusion cuisine throughout the day.
• The a la carte breakfast was our favorite meal, featuring local produce with a focus on Greek fare and great coffee and juices (Breakfast is served from 8:00 to 11:00 at OVAC, but it can be also brought to the suite).

What you should know

• While we loved the quiet location of the hotel, for some guests it may feel a little too remote. Positioned on the outskirts of Imerovigli, the hotel is 25 minutes walk away from the center of the village with its many restaurants and attractions. It takes only a few minutes by car though.
• As virtually all hotels on Santorini, Cavo Tagoo is seasonal, opening between April and October. Reserve well in advance — it's a popular place!
• Our pool suite was great, but it could be insulated from the noise a bit better. We could hear upstairs guests running water and talking in the bathroom. The outside area also lacked total privacy, as the room above had a view over our pool.
• This hotel tends to get loud and crowded at times, especially at sunset time, as the restaurant and the pool are available to non-guests.
• Even for Santorini standards, the food and drinks are expensive here. The drinks at the sunset bar are overpriced to the extreme, especially as they are offered in cheap plastic “glasses”, and with no napkins nor nuts or olives or snacks to munch on. Cavo could make improvements in at least how it serves them.
• There is no gym and Cavo does not have an onsite spa either, but in-room massages can be arranged.
• While the hotel's vibe aims to attract couples, it is also one of the few hotels located on the rim of the caldera that accepts families with children (it is much safer as it's not perched on the steep slope directly).
