Staying at Gili Lankanfushi meant we had to put our shoes in a basket upon arrival and stay barefoot until we departed. It’s a symbolic ceremony: we traded schedules, news alerts, and worries for bare feet, salt air, and the gentle rhythm of the lagoon. Breakfasts are served directly on the sand. Even bike rides happen barefoot. Within hours, the outside world felt very far away.

The island itself feels like a small, self-contained world. Thick tropical foliage covers more of the land than we expected, instantly distinguishing it as an eco-luxury resort. Cycling around on bamboo bikes quickly became one of our favorite ways to explore. The jungle paths wind past hidden corners, including an open-air cinema tucked so discreetly into the greenery that we almost missed it the first time.
The 45 villas of the resort hover above the lagoon. Ours felt like a private tropical hideaway, with a generous, well-thought-through layout, designed to let the sun, breeze, and sea take center stage. The sun deck quickly became our home base. We spent hours there, stretched out on loungers or suspended over the water in the hammock nets, listening to the gentle lap of the sea against the wooden decking.

Above the main room was a rooftop terrace we barely used during the day, but one evening the staff suggested we sleep up there. They set up a mattress on the deck, piled it with pillows, and left us under the open sky.
It took forever to fall asleep, not because it was uncomfortable (quite the opposite!), but because the stars were so sharp and clear that lying there felt like we had to stay awake to witness it. We woke up once in the dark to the sound of a heavy splash; some sea creature thrashing in the water below. Shortly after, we drifted off again.
We quickly learned that the real traffic at Gili isn’t on the jetty, but underneath it. The resort sits on the edge of a deep channel, meaning the marine life is abundant and fearless.
The transition from hot sun to cool water became a daily ritual. Drifting along the house reef felt like flying in slow motion over a crowded city of coral. We spotted eagle rays gliding like stealth bombers in the deep blue, and small reef sharks patrolling the shallows—harmless, but thrilling to see up close. It’s a different kind of silence down there, broken only by the crackle of the reef and the sound of your own breathing.

The island’s castaway theme is woven throughout. Everything feels unforced. Nothing is rushed. They call the butlers “Mr. Friday” and “Mrs. Friday,” a Robinson Crusoe nod that should feel corny but somehow doesn’t. Our Mr. Friday figured out our routines faster than we did—a pot of coffee at 7 am, long breakfasts, extra towels for the sun deck. We never had to ask.
Once we were settled, our only other appointment was with relaxation. The spa is tucked into the trees at the far end of the island. We went late one evening and were the last booking of the night. The treatment was so slow and gentle that we were barely able to stay awake. Or maybe we did drift off. The therapist didn’t seem fazed.
The overwater bar became our default spot. Casual lunches, late-afternoon drinks, dinner once when we couldn’t be bothered to go anywhere else. Once the bartender made a gin cocktail with kaffir lime that we’re still thinking about.
One night, we walked through the jungle paths to By the Sea, the Japanese restaurant, and had some of the best sushi we’ve had. It was precise, cold, and minimal; the kind of meal where you don’t want to talk much because the flavors demand your full attention.
Another night, the staff set up a beach barbecue, styled like a night market. Different food stalls, low lights, sand underfoot. It was playful in a way resort dinners usually aren’t; less ceremony and more just… eating.

There is a secret in the center of the island that explains why the food tastes so vivid. Hidden behind palm fronds is a massive organic garden. It’s a sanctuary of orderly beds growing basil, lemongrass, and lettuce—in the middle of the ocean.
We cycled there one afternoon just to walk the rows. It smells intense; earthy and green, a sharp contrast to the salt air we’d grown used to. It’s a reminder that the luxury here isn’t about importing everything from halfway across the world: it’s about using what is right in front of you.
Gili Lankanfushi came at the very end of an epic island-hopping journey, during which we visited several other resorts. It made leaving especially hard. The resort is only about 20 minutes by speedboat from Malé, but emotionally it felt much farther away. We’d gotten used to the rhythm—barefoot mornings, long empty hours, no alerts or updates. The speedboat back to Malé felt like a jolt. The airport felt worse.
If we had to summarize our Gili Lankanfushi experience in one emotion, it would be reluctance to leave. It isn’t about flash or spectacle. The experience at the resort is defined by space, nature, and an understated level of service that makes everything feel effortless.
Some places are best remembered in fragments: the sound of water under the deck, the feel of sand at breakfast, the soft light just before sunset. We captured those moments as we lived them, and the images that follow are our way of holding onto that feeling a little longer.
