From the moment the gates opened, we understood why this resort stands apart. Massive white-stone walls and abstract wooden verandas create seductive patterns against the sky, while reflecting pools and pathways cool the air, complemented by the constant sea breeze. Everything feels deliberate—monumental yet intimate.

“At Alila Uluwatu, panoramic views over the Indian Ocean are complemented by visually striking pool villas, each with serene interiors and seductive outdoor living spaces.”
— From our review of Alila Villas Uluwatu
Created by Singapore’s WOHA studio, Alila Villas Uluwatu treats space, light, water, and views with rare intelligence and drama.
The fifty-meter infinity pool seems to dissolve into the ocean itself, and the cliff-hanging bar (a suspended cabaña that appears to float above the void) quickly became our favorite sunset ritual. We would sit there for hours, cocktails in hand, watching the sky turn from gold to indigo while the waves crashed far below on the rugged beach we could never quite reach by swimming.
The minimalism here is confident, never cold. It makes no apologies for being for those who appreciate quiet luxury over flashy excess.

“The villas have charming details inside: fans cooling water spray on the face, fresh orchids, sarongs, and beach bag, range of Alila Spa cosmetics (with a separate line “for her” and “for him”)— and even leather luggage tags.”
— From our review of Alila Villas Uluwatu
We checked into a One Bedroom Pool Villa — and our stay was personalized.
Before we even left home, the hotel had sent a thoughtful electronic questionnaire asking about everything from pillow preferences and ambient-music tastes to dietary needs and the kinds of experiences we hoped for.
The result? Our butler greeted us by name with chilled towels and fresh orchids, already knowing we preferred minimal interference during the day but full pampering at sunset.
“Alila Villas Uluwatu is one of the most innovative, exciting seaside resorts we stayed at in Bali.”
— From our review of Alila Villas Uluwatu
The serene white villa interiors open onto a generous private pool and outdoor living space, with the iconic gazebo perched at the top of the pool — perfect for sunbathing and resting, with views over the resort grounds and towards the sea.
Inside, ceiling fans turn lazily overhead. Cooling water sprays on the face after a hot day. Stacks of sarongs and a beach bag invite long strolls down to the beach. Separate “for her” and “for him” lines of Alila Spa products are carefully restocked every day.
Each evening, a tray of delicate treats arrived with our tea—tiny bites chosen to help us sleep deeply after long days of doing very little.
“Wellness is at the heart of Alila Villas Uluwatu — featuring yoga, holistic spa therapies, and wellness retreats.”

Mornings began with a swim in our private pool, followed by breakfast at Warung, the more casual restaurant flanking the main infinity pool. The Mie Goreng there—simple, smoky, packed with flavor—quickly became our daily craving. In the evenings, we dressed up slightly for Cire, where the international menu felt refined without being stuffy. Between meals, we rotated between the dramatic cliff-edge pool, the spa (where treatments left us both glowing), and long, lazy hours at the suspended bar watching the ocean perform its endless show.
One afternoon we slipped away to Spa Alila and discovered a whole new level of reset. Tucked in a calm, contemporary space filled with warm ambient lighting and the soothing scent of essential oils, it felt like the resort’s quiet heart. We both chose deep-tissue massages infused with Alila’s signature “Sayang Sayang” technique — those graceful, nurturing strokes passed down through generations that somehow calm the body, mind, and spirit all at once.
“Our own dedicated butler — reachable by WhatsApp around the clock — seemed to anticipate our needs before we even voiced them.”
The service throughout was impeccable yet never intrusive. Our personal butler anticipated needs before we voiced them, and every staff member we encountered—from the pool attendants to the spa therapists—made us feel genuinely cared for rather than simply served. We never had to ask twice for anything, and that quiet, thoughtful attentiveness is what made the whole experience feel so effortlessly romantic.
The pre-arrival questionnaire had clearly done its job; our little preferences were quietly noted and then remembered throughout our stay. Fresh Illy capsules appeared each morning once they noticed how much coffee we drank, and the evening turndown was timed so perfectly that we never once interrupted housekeeping. Everything felt discreet yet deeply personal, as if the entire team was quietly working together to make us feel completely at home in this dramatic clifftop sanctuary.

“The sea here is not suitable for swimming, though the private beach at the bottom of the cliff makes for a beautiful place to picnic.” — From our review of Alila Villas Uluwatu
The resort’s remote clifftop location means you’ll likely stay put—which, for us, was pure bliss, but something to consider if you crave nightlife or easy access to other attractions.
We did make the 600-step descent to the hotel’s private beach at the base of the cliff. It’s not a place for swimming—the waves are powerful and the shore rocky—but it is heartbreakingly beautiful for a picnic or simply sitting with your feet in the sand, listening to the roar of the Indian Ocean.
“Uluwatu Temple, perched on a dramatic 70-meter cliff, is one of Bali’s most sacred sea temples, offering breathtaking ocean views and the legendary Kecak Dance.”
— Uluwatu Temple
One afternoon, we ventured to nearby Uluwatu Temple, just fifteen minutes away by car. The sunset views were every bit as legendary as promised, and the Kecak dance performance at dusk was mesmerizing.
Pro tip: guard your belongings—the local monkeys are bold and surprisingly quick. They are especially adept at snatching sunglasses right off unsuspecting tourists’ faces.
Where to Stay in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia
Alila Villas Uluwatu is, without question, one of the most innovative and exciting seaside resorts we’ve experienced in Bali. We fell hard for its sophisticated atmosphere, the way the architecture frames those vertigo-inducing ocean views, and the sense that every detail had been considered with a couple like us in mind. It’s ideal for honeymoons, anniversaries, or any moment when you want the world to fade away and romance to take center stage.
We left feeling completely restored, a little spoiled, and already planning our return. Alila Villas Uluwatu doesn’t just deliver luxury—it delivers an experience that lingers long after you’ve unpacked at home.
