Our private villa also had an atmosphere of unfussed luxury. It was beautifully designed, spacious, and relaxing. The interior of the villa spilled naturally onto the private veranda, which in turn led to a private swimming pool. The veranda was our favorite spot, ideal for curling up with a good book in the afternoon.
Our bathroom had a steam room shower and a fab bathtub. The bed was super comfy as well; we had some of the best sleeps here. The flat-screen TV had a great sound system, which was easy to operate (this is still a common problem at hotels). There was also a superb selection of films, for no additional fee. This was perfect for a rainy day, and once, for a jetlag-induced sleepless night.

Cape Weligama’s layout is inspired by a traditional village, with twelve manicured acres atop a cliff, and it has a range of facilities that make it into a true destination resort. The fabulous crescent-shaped swimming pool, positioned on top of the cliff and just above the gym and bar is the hotel’s most visible attraction. Fringed by a few lone palms, the pool’s edge appears to fuse seamlessly with the shimmering sea.

Cape Weligama resort had a perfect location for a stopover as we traveled from the southern tip of the island back up north. The coastal motorway linking Galle with the capital is excellent as well (the airport is three hours away). But the resort is well located for exploring this part of the island, too. Galle, with its old Dutch fort (it’s a must-see!), is just a short drive away.
If you are also planning to journey across the island, a good idea is to combine a stay at Cape Weligama with check-ins to its sister properties, such as the Ceylon Tea Trails located deep in the highlands, or the Wild Coast Tented Lodge on the island’s southern coast (we loved that place!)
