It seemed impossible, but the opening of the Andaz Peninsula Papagayo in December 2013 brought even more polish to this fancy seaside pocket of northwestern Costa Rica.
Local It-architect Ronald Zürcher designed the hotel with a nod to the region’s pristine natural beauty: a façade that resembles local shells and cocoons; caña brava and local stone throughout the public spaces; driftwood handicrafts by Costa Rican artisans on the walls; and Latin music that plays on a loop.
Standout features in the 153 opulent suites include floor-to-ceiling windows, spacious balconies, lamps inspired by the oropendola (a local bird) and white riverbed floors in the bathrooms, which also offer indoor-outdoor showers and bay views.
The expansive grounds encompass nature trails, two small beaches, two infinity pools and three distinctive restaurants: Chao Pescao (small plates and innovative cocktails), Río Bongo (Latin cuisine) and Ostra (sophisticated seafood).
