Located in the Marakele National Park, within a dramatic landscape encompassing vast plains, rivers, deep gorges and majestic mountains, Marataba is an exclusive 23,000-hectare private concession in the heart of the malaria-free reserve.

African Renaissance

Marataba Safari Lodge embraces both the contemporary and the ancient in a sophisticated union of innovative architecture, modern design, and technology.

Inspired by the discovery of ancient ruins, the lodge’s conical towers are reminiscent of the African civilizations of Great Zimbabwe and Thulamela.

The building’s design mixes dry stone walling, wood, cow-skin throws, and carpets with elegant lighting, steel and huge expanses of glass, taking full advantage of the spectacular panoramic scenery.

Luxury tents

Fifteen tented suites are an intriguing mix of canvas, timber and stone, each exquisitely furnished and decorated.

There’s a large sleeping area, an open plan bathroom with freestanding bath, separate rain shower and an outside shower as well as a private viewing deck, overlooking the sweeping plains and meandering river below.

Guests can expect excellent gourmet cuisine with African influences—as well as a very good South African wine selection—in the elegantly appointed dining room, outdoors on the dining verandah or in an open Boma, under the glorious African sky.

Game

The Marakele Parks bushes give a superb game and birdlife viewing opportunities.

With a little bit of luck, one can expect to see “the big five”:  lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros (both black and white), as well as wild dog, cheetah, leopard, brown hyena or rare antelope. This malaria-free wilderness is also home to the world’s largest breeding colony of the endangered Cape Vulture.
