When the US military vacated, travelers moved in and luxury resorts weren’t far behind. Starwood’s sexy W brand staked its claim with its first tropical resort set on a 30-acre cliff top with a private white-sand beach below.
Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola’s modern design sees polished cement floors and wood walls contrasting against dayglow hues and mod décor. W dubs its rooms categories “Oasis,” “Spectacular,” “Fabulous,” “Fantastic,” and “Marvelous” and Wow,” and delivers on those promises with sliding glass doors opening to private balconies or patios facing the ocean or tropical gardens. Sexy open bathrooms add more than a bit of kink and the toilet has its own space cordoned off by a sliding wood door.
The waters of this W’s private beach, called Whispering Cove, protect a pristine reef teeming with reef fish and the occasional Hawksbill sea turtle. It’s the perfect spot for a snorkel, and the resort hands out complimentary fins, masks and snorkels.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with laying out at the pool all day long, especially when the resort’s Wet poolside bar and grill will deliver craft cocktails and fresh grilled fish to your lounger. For a more refined dining experience make a reservation at Sorcé, which pulls together tastes passed down through generations of Vieques natives, creating dishes with locally sourced and in-season ingredients.
