Facing the Great Southern Ocean, solitary in a remote point of Australia’s Kangaroo Island, Southern Ocean Lodge shimmers at the crest of a cliff like a streak of gemstone on top of geological layers—almost lost in the vast expanses of land and sea.
The lodge appears low-key from the outside, emphasizing the vistas that surround it—yet it feels huge inside. This feat of architecture owns its existence to Hayley and James Baillie, owners of the hotel, who commissioned architect Max Pritchard with creating what today is one of Australia’s top design lodges.
Landscapes invited in
The architect realised the project in an artful fusion of nature and contemporary luxury. Keeping the décor minimal, Pritchard utilised sweeping window walls to make the most of the exceptional views.
The luminous interiors culminate in the Great Room, the focal point of the hotel. It’s a vast pavilion with floor-to-ceiling windows and a hundred-metre wall of golden limestone, weaving through the length of the building.
Piercing the cavity of the room is a suspended steel fireplace. Beautiful furniture, designed by Malaysian-born designer Khai Liew, intersperse the room.
The 21 split-level suites cascade down the slope from the Great Room. They too have bespoke furniture and feature lavish sleeping areas, sunken lounges, glass-walled en-suites and outdoor terraces.
Clean lines, natural materials and textures (including sandblasted limestone floors) and neutral colours (cream, beige, slate grey, chocolate) all combine to create a pared-back style that doesn’t pretend to compete with the wild scenery of the island.
Kagaroo Island is a land of sweeping landscapes and an abundance of wildlife—which is why it is often hailed as Australia’s Galapagos.
The lodge organizes guided excursions, which may include a walk amongst sea lions and fur seals in the Seal Bay, or a close encounter with kangaroos and koalas. Plus, guests will surely spot dolphins and whales, seen through the glass wall of the sunken lounge.
