The experiences of artists and scientists reveal something true about the life’s journey—and make us appreciate how travel can enrich every individual. Forged into snap, short sentences, their thoughts can remind us of things that are important in life, things we ought to value.
So who are—or were—the people we quote?
Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821–1890) was an extraordinary man. He served the British Empire as a geographer, explorer, translator, writer, soldier, spy and diplomat, as well as a natural scientist in various roles. He travelled and explored Asia, Africa and the Americas extensively and was known for his exceptional knowledge of languages and cultures —including the ability to speak 29 European, Asian and African languages.
From the world of Victorian adventure we journey to the world of science and rationalism, embodied by the figure of Carl Sagan (1934–1996).
Sagan was an American astronomer, astrophysicist and cosmologist. As a science popularizer and science communicator he advocated skeptical inquiry and the application of scientific method in everyday life. Always a dreamer, he pioneered exobiology and was involved in the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project, which inspired a novel Contact, made into the 1997 motion picture of the same title.
A fellow scientist is Erol Ozan, a professor of information technology who also writes fiction. Then there is Tim Cahill, a travel writer based in US, best known for setting the world record for speed in driving the entire length of the American continents, end-to-end. Finally Henry Miller (1891–1980) was a controversial writer who challenged American cultural values and moral attitudes, and whose books Tropic of Cancer, Black Spring and Tropic of Capricorn (all published in the 1930’s) were banned in USA, for a time.
Their fine writing or inspirational thoughts express our search for answers and can motivate and empower the heart and mind.
