To say Maldives is like a dream is to venture dangerously close to the realm of travel clichés. Yet the sight of the emerald sea with white patches of sand topped by tall palms is such a picture-perfect marvel that we are letting ourselves go. And since we found Huvafen Fushi to be an exemplary Maldivian resort, we will do it again: it is like a paradise. Sue us.
This country is like a dream, but not only because of its natural beauty. The entire existence of these low-lying islands seems fleeting: a utopian fantasy, perfect and destined to eventually disappear—beneath the rising waters of the warming planet.
With the aim of experiencing the dreamy islands once more, we returned to Maldives—visiting some older resorts we always wanted to experience for ourselves… and some new ones, too.
Exemplary island resort
Huvafen Fushi has been on our to-do list for a long time, a point of fact that concerned us a little: was it going to feel “dated”? In the competitive world of top Maldivian resorts, where each new opening has to wow with something better, bigger or having more of something than the other hotels, will Huvafen live up to our high expectations—and the widely accepted promise as one of the best in Maldives?
We needn’t have worried. Beach villas may be smaller than in other resorts, but they are actually proportional to the size of the island, and after the extensive refurbishment in 2012 all villas were updated to the top luxury standards and packed with hi-tech features. Plus, there is a talk about a major refurbishment, so grand things may be coming (we are spilling the beans—please don’t tell anybody!)
What’s more, you can’t say Huvafen Fushi lacks in the department of “the firsts”: its underwater spa was the first in Maldives—and the infinity pool is still among the most iconic ones. So are the villas on stilts: they are the benchmark for other resorts.
But for us, the essence of this resort is not something one can photograph or put on some “luxury resort must-have” checklist.
Huvafen Fushi is about the very special atmosphere of stylish requiescence. It’s about a relaxed island living at its best. It’s about doing virtually nothing.
And by nothing we mean starting a day with breakfast so lavish and good we never wanted to finish it, then busying ourselves with some snorkelling, tanning, feeding stingrays and perhaps a spa treatment—and ending it with a sundowner at the trendsetting Raw, an overwater hangout of the Cafe Del Mar kind.
From there we would retire to Salt, topping all of it with some the finest dining we’d ever had. Can somebody carry us to the villa, please?
